Is it legal for a teenager to buy a gun?

Many people believe that a person must be 21 years old to buy a gun in the state of California. This is only partly true. The reality is that an 18-year-old who qualifies (i.e. does not have previous convictions or circumstances that prevent them from buying a gun) can buy a shotgun or a rifle. However, they cannot buy a handgun until they reach their 21st birthday.

What documentation is necessary to purchase guns?

First, you will need photo ID to prove who you are. The most commonly used document is a driver’s license though other government issued ID with your birthdate on it will work. You will also need proof that you live within the state of California. For this you can use a utility bill your lease agreement.

For members of the military, a military ID must be presented along with permanent duty station orders that show where you are stationed. For people who are not citizens of the U.S., you must have documents proving that you are here legally. Most people, unless they qualify for an exemption, will also need to supply their Handgun Safety Certificate.

Can I get a gun the same day I buy one?

Many wonder if the firearm laws in California allow a person to buy a gun and take it home with them the same day. The answer is no – everyone must comply with the ten-day waiting period that is the rule of the land in California. Once the ten days have passed then you can go back to where you bought it from and pick up your gun.

Is there a limit to the number of guns I can own?

No. There is no federal limit and not limit set by the state of California regarding how many guns a person can legally own.

Does a concealed carry permit from another state work in California?

If you have come from another state and in that state you had a permit to carry a concealed handgun, that permit does not give you the right to carry a gun in California. You will need to get a Carry Concealed Weapon license from the state of California.
